The Sonnenkinderprojekt Namibia celebrated its 20th anniversary with a festive event on October 14, 2023. Since 2003, the association has been supporting the education of children and young people in Namibia.
The celebration was attended by more than 90 guests, including representatives of the Diepholz district, municipalities, schools and local media. The highlight of the event included a visit from a delegation from Namib High School in Swakopmund, Namibia. Led by Principal Roosmarie September, four teachers and two students took part in the festivities as part of a familiarization trip.
A delegation from Varrel High School traveled to Namibia in September to get to know Namib High School. The annual student exchange is made possible by a grant from the development policy school exchange program “ENSA” in Berlin.
Greetings from Deputy District Administrator Heiner Richmann, Joint Municipality Mayor Helmut Denker (Schwaförden), Joint Municipality Mayor Heinrich Kammacher (Kirchdorf) and Member of the Parliament Peggy Schierenbeck were among the other program highlights.
To the surprise of all guests, Johanna Ahlmeier from the Rotary Club of Stemwede-Dümmer presented a generous donation of 4,000 euros from the proceeds of barbecue sauce sets, which will be used to build new classrooms and equip them with modern learning materials.
The keynote speech was given by Professor Dr. Manfred Hinz (University of Bremen) and former Dean of the Faculty of Law of Namibia. Professor Dr. Manfred Hinz lived in Namibia for over 20 years and established the Faculty of Law at the University of Windhoek from 1990. In his festive speech, Prof. Dr. Manfred Hinz praised the work of the Sonnenkinderprojekt. This work takes place in a “spirit of trust”. “This is development policy as it should be”.
The Sonnenkinderprojekt Namibia would like to thank all donors, partners and friends for their long-standing support and commitment to education in Namibia.
